Ludic & Phatic

Assalamualaikum,

Ludic & Phatic. What is it? What is in your mind once reading it? Or perhaps you already knew about it unlike me.

Someone was discussing about the term ludic and phatic. I suddenly felt so small. I suddenly feels that how little knowledge that I have in this academic world. I realized the importance to be up-to-date with the current trends. But there are too many, too many to catch-up with. Articles downloaded were carried here and there, but the page number remain at 1. To move to another page might take ages. Too many tasks at the office, when at home, too many house chores to be completed. Once everything done, its time to call-off for the day.

From the Wikipedia (my instant source of information for general definition) I gathered that LUDIC is the term used to define the playful interface. It was coined in 2008. The term was introduced with the aim of counterbalancing the tendency of "infantilization" of play and stressing the complicities between technology and pleasure.

How does that sound? Well, in general it is about creating an interface that are playful and applicable mostly in games.

What is PHATIC?
Google searched image
I tried Mr Google again for the term phatic. It described through an article "Phatic technologies in modern society" (Wang, B. et. al, 2012) in Technology in Society, Vol 34(1) as "Phatic technologies are special forms of communication technologies devoted to personal and social needs and goals."

It is about the relationship between  society and technology. It is about creating technology for the society in this borderless world through social networking etc.

Wow! The article is very interesting. It opened-up how knowledge spurs. And again, it makes me feel so small. Be it in the acquired knowledge or discovered knowledge, how little knowledge that I have.

Let's strive to work harder to be a better muslims in all aspects.

Wallahua'lam.

Do Not Fear, SPM is Near

Image from Google search

Assalamualaikum all,

Days counted is FIVE. Yes, SPM is only 5 days away. It is just round the corner. Probably we can hear the heart beating very fast in each and everyone who are involved. Who are they that are involve? Students and parents. And teachers, perhaps.

I receive a text message from Atikah last night, requesting me to give her a call. And I did. She wanted to tell me that she will not be coming back this weekend (earlier were told that it was compulsory to come back). The hardworking and dedicated teachers are conducting extra classes for the students. It's OK dear it is for the best of the students. This final moments are the most crucial moments. Its not about last minute preparation. It is about last minutes strategies. No last minutes preparation will lead to ultimate success.

After a long chat, Atikah suddenly whispered to me, "Ibu, Atikah takut. Atikah tak jumpa dah ibu sebelum exam, doakan Atikah". Do not worry my dear, my prayers are always for you, day and night. Just try your best. Whatever the result will be is what Allah has destined for us. But maximum effort must be put into it. And do not forget to ask from no other but ALLAH.

My dear, I am wishing you the very best of luck. So does to all those sitting for SPM next week. Do your BEST! Work to the fullest! And believes in miracle from ALLAH. Solat and Doa.

Wallahua'lam.

Qurban 1433

Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar

La Ilaha illAllaa
Wallahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar walillahil hamd

Assalamualaikum all,

How was your Eid? I spent mine in Shah Alam. We did not went back to our hometown. Duty calls for my husband. Eid Adha is about sacrifices. Sacrifices can be in many faces. And this year we sacrificed our desire to go back home to fulfill the neighbourhood responsibility. The place we live, stay and work. Even RasulAllah SAW wanted us to be nice to our neighbours, how can we be nice if we do not know them? How can we know them if we do not join any programmes that will inculcate the love between neighbours? Therefore, here we are. In Shah Alam for the eid. Many showed surprise faces to see us around, but, we have been around for Eidul Adha for many years already.

Mr Hubby in action with our sacrifice

As usual the Surau will organized the sacrifice event. It is an event that really showed how difficult task can be done in a bliss with a team work. This year the Surau conducted the the sacrifice of 20 cows and 17 goats. Sound a lot isn't it? It is to me. I was skeptical about it earlier. But team work proves otherwise. The goats were slaughtered on the 10th of Zulhijjah after the Friday solat.

They handle the task professionally. The area was blocked using the plastic foldable tables (sounds funny - but that will do). The goats laid calmly. The eyes were closed using the long ears that they have. And with the lafaz, Bismillahu Allahu Akbar, all 17 were slaughtered one after another without any problem. The meat were fairly distributed according to syariah, and some were grilled to be enjoyed by the patrons to the surau.

11th Zuhijjah. The anxiety continues. Kids were up and running on the playground as early as 7am. The first cow were scheduled to be slaughtered at 6.45am that morning.

The 9th cow. Again, Mr Hubby in action.
By the time I reached the playground at 7.30am, the 9th cow was ready to be slaughtered. They have got to work fast as there are 20 cows in the line. I stopped to witness the slaughtering process (the fist time seeing it in a very near vicinity). Watching it, reminds me of how devotedly Prophet Ismail AS allowing himself to be slaughtered by his father in order to obey the instruction from the Rabb, Allah SWT. And Allah has tested their IMAN. How willing they are to sacrifice, even sacrificing one own life. How willing we are to sacrifice for Allah? Sacrificing the animal is only the manifestation of the act. Many more sacrifices that we must be able to do for Allah.

Earlier I thought, with 20 cows, it will definitely drag us to late hours. But, team work makes everything possible. By 11.30am, the lunch is ready to be enjoyed by everybody there. The meat were distributed fairly. Everybody had a happy time. New friends were made, stale friendship were rekindled. Thank you Allah for this rahmah. For giving us a beautiful place to live and stay. And continue doing ibadah only for ALLAH SWT.

Wallahua'lam.

Semester 1 2012/2013

Suasana pendaftaran (awal September 2012)
Salam all,

Now is 30 minutes past midnight. Calendar date is 25th October 2012 and 9 Zulhijjah 1433.
The university is again deserted. Many of the students has gone home. Went home for the Eid Adha and also the semester break. Yes, it is already the semester break. It was like yesterday was the registration day and suddenly today is already the mid term. Time really flies. In-Between settling the time table, solving students problem, filling in grants application form, writing proposal and article, preparing for class and others, i did not realize that half semester is already gone.

With that, age increases by day. And we are closer to THE DAY. In between our busy schedule how much tine do we spent for ibadah? Which is given higher priority?
Amin.

Bapak - Again.

CAUTION: This is an outdated entry. I found it in my draft box. A recollection of memories with Bapak.

Alfatihah untuk Bapak.

Dear blog,

I was on Emergency Leave yesterday (Monday). My father was attacked again on Saturday - heart attack. It is during our way back to kampung, in my car. The driving felt too slow. I wish we could fly the vehicle to the hospital. Anyway, Alhamdulillah, we are there - and not too late. Abang is already waiting for us at the emergency bay of the Seberang Jaya Hospital. The minute our car stopped, a hospital dresser wheeled a wheel chair to carry bapak to the emergency admission area. We relate what had happened during the journey - nothing happen, just informed him that bapak has taken 4 times the medicine prescribed to him to stop the pain on the chest but to no avail. As he wheeled bapak, I followed Abang.

The emergency area was not that big, that only one person is allowed to go in to follow bapak, therefore I waited outside. The situation in the emergency room is FARRRRR different from the one you see in the ER drama. It was calm and quiet. The nurses calmingly entertain bapak who was in great pain. The nurses were chatting happily instead. Geramnya aku ...grrrrrr. Just hope that they really know better. Soon after we left the hospital, leaving Abang to be with Bapak.

Monday, I have to leave for Shah Alam. At about 1.23pm, Mak asked us to leave as we still have a long journey ahead. I called my children to pay respect to their grand parents - bersalaman as usual. I hugged both my parents. As I turned to wave to them, I could see tears in Bapak's eyes. Bapak was sad to let us go. We are not happy either to leave him there. But, what choice do we have??????

I called Mak this morning, despite her not so well condition, she was already there at the hospital, taking care of Bapak. Being discharged? It is not in the near future as Bapak can still feel the pain in the chest.

Reminder --- Indeed

Assalamualaikum dear readers,

Today is 2nd Zulhijjah 1433. Yesterday, came in the mailbox a reminder to us, the fellow muslims about a sunnah that the Prophet suggested to whom are planning to perform sacrifice (qurban) for this coming eid adha. It came in twice from two different colleagues. Thank you.

Following this email was another email asking for the authenticity of the hadith. It was a slapped on my face. I have long practiced the sunnah (Alhamdulillah) but never occured to me to know or remember the *sanad for this hadith which I can readily defend. What a shame!!! I know it is of hadith sahih but I do not know who narrated it, and mentioned by whom. It shows how little knowledge that I have in Islamic knowledge. A PhD by qualification, but what do I have to answer in front the Rabb, Allah SWT?

*Sanad is the long list of people who passed down the hadith. It should begin with the person that listened to these words from the Prophet, Rasullah SAW himself and passed it down to others. The people in the sanad must be a trustworthy muslim, has never tell a single lie in his life or the value of the hadith will be downgraded or not accepted altogether.

In quest for some information, so that if ever asked, I am ready to defend the religion (deen) that I embraced and Rasulallah that I love, I did some quick search on the borderless world of knowledge - the internet. Through the quranexplorer.com, I managed to gain some knowledge. The excerpt is as follows:

Muslim :: Book 22 : Hadith 4869

Umm Salama reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said this: When any one of you intending to sacrifice the animal enters in the month (of Dhu'l-Hijja) he should not get his hair or nails touched (cut). It was said to Sufyan that some of the (scholars) did not deem this hadith to be Maffu'. He said: But I deem it as Marfu' (i. e. chain of narration traceable right up to the Holy Prophet).

Muslim :: Book 22 : Hadith 4873
Umm Salama, the wife of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him), reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) to have said: He who has a sacrificial animal with him whom (he intends) to offer as sacrifice, and he enters the month of Dhu'I-Hijja, he should not get his hair cut or nails trimmed until he has sacrificed the animal.

Muslim :: Book 22 : Hadith 4874

'Amr b. Muslim b. 'Ammar al-Laithi reported: While we were in a bathroom just before 'Id al-Adha some of the persons tried to remove the hair with the help of hair-removing chemicals. Thereupon some of the people owning the bath (or some of the people sitting therein) said that Sa'id b. Musayyib did not approve of it, or he prohibited it. Then I met Sa'id b. Musayyib and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: O my nephew, this is the hadith which has been forgotten, and abandoned. Umm Salama, the wife of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him), narrated to me Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said as narrated above.

Alhamdulillah, I finally got the answer. The hadith was mentioned by Muslim and narrated by Ummu Salamah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to seek for the hadith in Bukhari or Abu Dawwud.

However, Alhamdulillah, thanks to my two other colleagues, they added two more resources for this information from no other, the Internet:

1. A short tazkeerah by Ustaz Tuan Norhisham
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0u1jbBgZbo&feature=share

2. A Blog written by the famous Ust Dr Zaharuddin Abd Rahman.
http://zaharuddin.net/senarai-lengkap-artikel/3/219-zulhijjah-a-idiladha-beberapa-isu-a-hukum.html

May this piece of information, benefits us all, InsyaAllah. Ameen.

Wallahua'lam.

Dua' : Surah al-'Imran

Google searched image
Assalamualaikum dear readers,

I am sharing with you today, dua' found in surah Al-Imran.

Ayat 147

Their cry was only that they said: Our Lord! forgive us for our sins and wasted efforts, make our foothold sure, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk. (147)

Men said to them: "A great army is gathering against you, so fear them": but it (only) increased their faith. They said: "For us Allah sufficeth, and He is the best disposer of affairs". (173)

Our Lord! We have heard the call of one calling (us) to faith, 'Believe ye in the Lord!, and we have believed. Our Lord! forgive us our sins, blot out from us our iniquities, and take to Thyself our souls in the company of the righteous (193). "Our Lord! Grant us what Thou didst promise unto us through Thy Messengers, and save us from shame on the Day of Judgment: for thou never breakest Thy promise" (194).

Wahai Tuhan kami!

These verses are followed by another verse of promise from Allah SWT to the believers:

And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: ye are members one of another; those who have left their homes, and were driven out therefrom, and suffered harm in My cause, and fought and were slain, - verily I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath; - a reward from the presence of Allah and from His presence is the best of rewards" (195).

Subhanallah! Do we deserve the jannah? What have we done to be deserving the jannah? Y Allah, protect me from the fiery hell, and placed amongst the muttaqin in your jannah. Ameen.

May we will be able to gain some benefit in the hereafter with this minute information. Wallahua'lam.

A visit to Dungun

Assalamualaikum dear readers,

Obligation. Everybody has their obligation to fulfill. To Allah SWT, to the prophet and to mankind. Even to the other living things, there are obligations to fulfill. To animal - do not harm them, feed them if need to. To the plants is to water them and not to destroy them unnecessarily.
As one of my obligation to mankind is on my children. And last Sunday we performed a parently task by visiting my eldest who is in Dungun. She claimed that it has been a month since we last met and she misses me a lot, as an act of comfort we went to visit her.

We left Shah Alam at about 730am. Stopped by at a restaurant in Bentung and reached Dungun at about 1230pm. She was having a class which suppose to finish at 1230pm but had been extended to 2pm. We waited patiently in the car. I saw a student and requested her to tell my daughter of our arrival. Guess how she responded??? She did not believe it which make her friend dragged her out to see me. She was extremely surprised. We spent time at kak yan's house till 6pm when its time to send her back to the hostel. A meaningful 4 hours.

Muslimat's solat area. Only passers-by were seen.
We headed back after that. My husband insisted to go straight back home. A day trip. But when he felt tired after Maghrib I suggested that we stop at Kuantan for a rest. We stopped for Maghrib at a beautiful masjid in Kemaman. It is indeed a beautiful masjid. Cleaned and well kept but unfortunately there are no female residents there to perform solat Maghrib in jamaah and to listen to the lecture which followed after. It is sad to see a beautiful but empty masjid.

In Kuantan, it brought us from one hotel to another, as many are fully booked. We finally landed at a 3months old hotel for the night. We resume our journey back home on Sunday after breakfast feeling energetic and fresh.

Thank you Allah for protecting us throughout our journey. Another journey, another mankind obligation awaits us this coming weekend.

Wassalam.

Sepsis

Assalamualaikum dear readers,

I was browsing through the official email of my workplace (with thousands of members), and suddenly bumped into a mail that announced the demise of a young girl aged 17, a daughter of the Dean for Faculty of Art and Design, UiTM. Innalillahi wainna ilaihi rajiun. The cause of death is declared as SEPSIS.

What is sepsis that causes the death of a 17 year old? To kill my curiosity, I quickly seek an answer from Mr Google which provide me with the following information:

Sepsis is a condition in which the body is fighting a severe infection that has spread via the bloodstream. If a patient becomes "septic," they will likely have low blood pressure leading to poor circulation and lack of perfusion of vital tissues and organs. This condition is termed "shock" and is sometimes referred to as septic shock, when an infection is the cause of shock. This condition can develop either as a result of the body's own defense system or from toxic substances made by the infecting agent (such as abacteriavirus, or fungus).

Sepsis Symptoms and Signs

  • If a person has sepsis, they often will have fever. Sometimes, though, the body temperature may be normal or even low.
  • The individual may also have chills and severe shaking.
  • The heart may be beating very fast, and breathing may be rapid. Low blood pressure is often observed in septic patients.
  • Confusion, disorientation, and agitation may be seen as well as dizziness and decreased urination.
  • Some patients who have sepsis develop a rash on their skin. The rash may be a reddish discoloration or small dark red dots seen throughout the body.
  • Those with sepsis may also develop pain in the joints of the wrists, elbows, back, hips, knees, and ankles.

In a laymen term, it is a blood-infection which could lead to death. 17 years old is the age of my eldest, who is currently preparing for her SPM. The loss will surely be missed by the loved ones. But, Allah has decided, those are the only time the family can have her. Even though I do not her, i wish and pray may Allah place her together among the muttaqin. May Allah accept her good being and forgive any of her wrongdoings. Alfatihah to the late Khairunnasuha Binti Mustapha.

My Herbs Garden

Assalamualaikum all,

Great to be writing again, here, today. It is a piece to share my joy and happiness. It brings me to a happiness and piece of mind. Proudly to share with you my HERBS GARDEN.
It is only a 7X11 feet by size. But it houses many of my daily needs. Especially when i ran out of vege in stock and too lazy to go to the shop.
You can find red chilli (the one captured is green), cili api, mint, basil, daun selom, pucuk beluntas, daun sirih cina (good to lower your BP) and the banana tree (at the moment as a source for the leaves), curry leaves. And currently showering with love is the tumeric and ginger plant. And not to forget the lime tree. The ginger plant is going to grow into large plant so i decided to keep it small by consistently trimming it or removing it if it gets out of control.
This is where i will take a seat after weeding.5 minutes every morning before off to work. This where i find happiness to begin a new day with.
Enjoy gardening!!!!
The Green Chilli
(In the background is the banana tree)
This is what my mother in-law called 'Sirih Cina'.
A good substitute for daily vege intake.
Potted mint

Mak said this is called 'Pucuk Beluntas'
My previous Indonesian helper, said this plant is good for women's health.

Wallahua'lam.
Me, I recently re-plant it. My earlier plant had to go to give way for some small house renovation.
My baby banana tree.
Pokok pisang raja .... hopefully it is a fruitful plant. ;)
Cili api - the 'hot fiery' small chilli
Daun selom

Wassalam.
