Ber ta'awwudz

There are things that we do because others do, because others tell us to do. Seldom that we seek to find the origin of the instruction. Be it from the Quran or the Hadith. Those are the only two reliable sources and guidance that we have as muslim.

We normally began our Quran recitation with the Ta'awwudz ( اعوذبالله من الشیطن الرجیم ). But... how many of us really know why we must oblige to the instruction? Surah An-Nahl (98-100) provide the answer.

In these verses, Allah instructed us to begin our Quran recitation by asking from Allah to protect us from the devil, syaitan. According to Ibn Katsir in his tafseer (page 254, vol 5), we seek protection from Allah so that whoever reads the Quran will not get confused with the ayah and will be able to focus and tries to understand the meaning. This instruction is simply because the syaitan will not be able to rule those who are faithful to Allah and tawakkal only to Allah. However, syaitan will be able to rule those chose to follow him (the syaitan) and disregard Allah (Nau'uzubillah).

Let's do what Allah and Rasul tell us to do. Insha Allah.
